Sikh Mela, Deighton, 2016

Thousands of people enjoyed the seventh annual Sikh Mela in Huddersfield on Sunday, 24th July.  The festival, which was held at the Yorkshire Lions’ Warrenside base in Deighton, celebrates the best of Sikh culture, and draws crowds from across the UK to witness martial arts, sports, music and more.

There was a packed programme of events which included children’s rides, football, tug of war, weight lifting, food and drink stalls and raffles. Other highlights were an American SWAT team demonstration, a strongman competition and a birds of prey show. There was also a gatka (Sikh sword-fighting) display.  Organisers said the atmosphere was ‘very good’.

Members of Huddersfield & District Army Veterans Association went to the alcohol-free and meat-free event and were made very welcome. The veterans were invited back for the eighth annual festival next year. All the veterans who attended agreed that this is an event not to be missed and are are all eagerly looking forward to next year's event.
