Greenhead Park War Memorial

Hundreds came together at Greenhead Park to commemorate Remembrance Day.

Striking red poppies stood out from the dark clothing worn by veterans, religious groups and 300 schoolchildren at the park’s imposing Cenotaph, to pay their respects to those who gave their lives in service and to mark the end of hostilities of World War One.

The Vicar of Huddersfield, the Rev Simon Moor, led the service, at which Ian Fillan, president of Huddersfield Veterans also spoke about the importance of retaining the day’s relevance through younger generations.

Different dignitaries, including West Yorkshire deputy lieutenant David Dinmore, other officials, group representatives and schools then stepped forward amd laid their wreaths.

Afterwards, Mr Dinmore said: “It’s a great privilege to be given the opportunity to be invited here. What I want to do is encourage school children to pass the baton of remembrance on – they are the next generation. It’s very good see so many children here, a number which I think has been building up since five years ago. These commemorations must go on”.

Adam Sherwood, 17, laid a wreath on behalf of Kirklees College. Talking about those involved in the world wars, he said: “We wouldn’t be here without them. Everyone should remember them regardless as to whether they knew anyone involved or not”.

Members of Huddersfield’s Sikh community also attended. Tim Bhullar, of the World War Sikh Soldier Organisation, is behind a plan to get a memorial statue to fallen Sikhs installed in the park. He said, “A total of 83,000 Sikhs died in WW1. We want to encourage our community to join this remembrance, which affected every community”.

After the service in Greenhead Park a number of Veterans continued to Edgerton Cemetery for a short Remembrance Service at the Huddersfield and District Army Veterans Association's own memorial. The service was taken by Rev Canon Simon Moor and the wreath was laid by Captain Ian Fillan.
